Hi!

I built a small home server that runs my personal file storage, photo db, some docker services and so on. Currently the storage consists of a 1TB Samsung PM9A1 NVME SSD (TBW: 600) , that is partioned as LVM and runs PVE system and the VMs/CTs (system partition), and 3x Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD 4TB (TBW: 2400).

In the first run I configured the 870EVO as RAID-Z1 using ZFS file system. But now I read every here and there, that consumer SSD aren't made for ZFS and wear out fast. Now I compared TBW values to a DATACENTER SSD, the Samsung PM893 3.84TB SATA SSD. The PM893 wins against 870 EVO, but only by a factor of 1.5 (2400TBW to 3500TBW).

I think that should not prevent using the 870EVO with ZFS.
Is there any other reason not to use ZFS on my 870EVO?

--> I want the disk to work for about 5 years. The use case is "ssd friendly".

I want a safe and fast storage, as well as backups to PBS. The system is not made for benchmarks...

What kind of partition layout would you prefer? Would you even recommend a JBOD like configuration without raid? Or would you buy a 4th disk to build a raid10?

Thx,
Sebastian
