Hello,
i'm about to build my new proxmox server (just one single node).
i have a Dell powerEdge R730 (8 SAS slot + PCIe 3gen slot) + dual 10GB SFP+ nic card
We have 128GB DDR 4 and two CPU.
My question is about storage choice :
- PVE Os is installed on a 256GB nvme (PCI card , bootable with "clover boot" usb stick).
- i already have 6 x 600GB SAS 15K drive (no data at all now).
- i also have dual NVME pci card , empty , i'm waiting for buying NVMe for it..

- Which NVME ( x2 ) for my pci card must i buy ?
- Must i add more SAS 15K or 10K disk ?
- Or Must i replace 15K SAS HDD with SAS SSD drive ?
- Or add another dual NVME pci card with 2 nvme ?

(we only only have 3TB of storage)

Hi, if budget is not a constraint please go with SSDs anyday, they are more reliable, power efficient, and cheaper in the long run. They have better iops, better read and write speeds. If this is a production setup, i would recommend you to go for enterprise grade SSDs. if this is for a homelab or for not mission critical environments with less load you can even go with SATA SSDs.
Get yourself 8 SSD's and have a RAID setup with your HBA or the raid card. Better if you could install PVE on something else and use the NVMe for some better stuff ( for loading PVE from NVMe is just an overkill) you can probably use that NVMe for caching or better take it off and save some energy if the drive serves no purpose.

Enterprise grade SSDs will help you utilize your 10GBPS SFP better.

Regards

i choose 2 x 970 EVO PLUS 2TB , with 5 years or 1,200 TB TBW.
And add 2 more 600GB , 15K SAS 12GBPS. (4.8TB)
enough for homelabs .

Anyday i would go for Samsun 870 EVO,

Don't mix SATA SSD and SAS HDD in a raid array.

Try to go all SSD or all HDD, better with managment

8 x 600GB 15K 12GBPS (already having 6 HDD ... so ) + 2 ssd nvme on pcie 3.0 (870 EVO are discontinued now ;-))
Thank you for your tips.
