I go back to you because I have all freshly installed my server proxmox 5 on my server HP Proliant Gen 10 microserver.

The problem is that via the GUI I can not add a disk while there are 3 in the host.

Proxmox runs on a 32 Gb usb key set on the internal port of the host.

Do you have an idea ?

Do I need to mount drives on the command line?

Please do not use USB Sticks. Proxmox will wirte plenty of logs so it will brake in some month.

Yes you have to do this on the command line.

I will mount it on ssd and partition to have room for my VM.

Regarding the command line should I use fdisk?

OK, I am a bit confused here.
you tell OP not to use USB sticks, I have seen tons of post here that encourage people to use Flash Sticks for OS.
so who is right?
based on posts I have found, I was planning to do my setup on 2 USB sticks in ZFS raid-1 config, should I revise my plan now?
what would be the proper setup if I add 2 ssd to the mix? I mean can I install on USB and move the logs and temps to SSDs? does it make sense or should I just install on SSDs directly and skip the USB totally? (based on your post here it seams proper)

There is no tutorial that indicates the beginnings via proxmox.

No Proxmox staff member will ever tell you to use a USB Stick as OS drive or something else.

I never said the posts where from Proxmox stuff members, but there are still lots of posts all over the forum suggesting that it is ok to install proxmox on USB Flash. it is not my prefered setup but it does have it;s appeal in a long run.
I have a rack case, and it is a pain to get inside if I need to replace the disk or maybe try out a new version.
if my install is on USB I can pop the keys out, put a new one in and install easily, if I like what I see just leave the keys and keep the old setup for backup or reuse them next time. if something goes wrong just pop the old keys in and reboot. with SSDs I have to open the case and do a lot more work just to try out the new version and I do not have many extra SSDs laying around. hence my interest in using flash usb for install. but if it is bad, so be it.
I know 100% that using Flash media other than SSDs is not good for Windows setup, but I do see many people use it for Linux installs.

There are even more that tell you to not do it. If you know what you do - go for it. But it _will_ fail (my first failed after just 2 months..).
USB disks are a no-go if you have a lot of write cycles - wich you will have with PVE.

I just bought 2 ssd a 60 Gb for proxmox and a 120 Gb to store my VM.

I have 4 bays in which I will place 3 drives for my NAS, I would like to assign the physical drives to my VM Xpenology which will manage its RAID. (RAW partition to give the physical disks to the VW)

The 4th disk will serve as storage for the backups of my VM and others.


I hope I have been quite complete.

If you use an HW raid I would do it this way.

The 2 60GB disk as a normal ext4 storage.
The 120 VM disk with LVM-Thin or LVM, if you need snapshots use LVM-Thin.
The backup disk also ext4.
