I'm considering taking advantage of 1.4's shared storage feature using a large disk array (not sure what that disk array will be composed of yet). Can I store the VMs on the array (for online migration) and store their snapshots on another part of the array (for backup)?

I guess you will use some kind of NAS/SAN. If so, I would export one iSCSI lun and put LVM on top - to store the VM disk images. For backup, I would export an NFS share.
