Slow Spam Processing

We have a lot of domains and email coming through the load on the server never goes above 2 and it has more than 4 vCPUs. But the email hangs at proxprox for minutes before it get processed. What can we change to fix this? The mailq is high and we need to enable more mail to be processed at a time I believe.
