Setting Up Storage - Want to get it right

First, very new to proxmox. I have been playing with it for about a month, have the basics. Because I was learning, I decided to crash my box and start over. I want to get the storage right, but honestly it is still unclear in the documentation to noobs what does what when you have to select something like ISO, or Snippits in the drop down, and I have a lot to config, and want to do it right, so thought I would ask here.

A buddy of mine downsized his companies tech footprint and gifted me an older Dell PowerEdge R740 and a 12 disk Synology RackStation.

The PowerEdge is light on ram, 96 gigs, has 2 CPU's for a total of 48 cores, and massive on storage. I know they used it for VMs.

I am seeking advice on how to config this storage to get the most out of what I have.

Bays 0 - 13 (14 in total) 1.2 TB SAS Disks
Bays 18 - 23 (6 in total) 256 gig SATA
It has an internal drive, of 7 gigs, it was too small to put proxOS on it, so I put it on drive 23.

I only have one node, and will always just have the one, and want to put the backups on the NAS.

I would really like advice. Do I ZFS all the SAS for VM Disks at RAID 10 or what would you do.

What I would do in your situation:
1. since you have a limited amount of ssd's, I'd install PVE on disks 0+1. yes that means a 2.4TB of raw disk for such a small use but the alternative will be more impactful.
2. "Slow" Pool: disks 2-13, striped mirror
3. "Fast" Pool: disks 18-23, striped mirror

Depending on what you are using the space for would have impact on the arrangement.
