[SOLVED] server failure after upgrade

good day everybody,
I have a problem with a proxmox server after upgrade.
it came after reboot with hostname CloudLinux8-CHANGE-CLONE and practically no VEs and nothing in /etc/pve
the server looks OK in terms of hardware, I see all shell entries in history and the upgrade info in /var/log/messages but nothing seems to work...
any hints on debugging this issue?

I've noticed /etc/hosts was changed during upgrade. I"ve restored /etc/hosts from backups but server is not coming up, stuck in a kind of boot loop...

server is down now and I'm on my way to the DC.
tech guy that did the upgrade said he ran
apt update, apt upgrade and the reboot
on another machine it worked well and the machine came back online with new kernel..

Hi,

We highly recommend using apt dist-upgrade instead of apt upgrade

I would check the syslog/journalctl in order to see if there is an error message, and please provide us with the output of pveversion -v command.

Can you please try to do apt update && apt dist-upgrade command? If this command didn't help, please provide us with the following command from (CloudLinux8-CHANGE-CLONE) node

Thank you for the output!

As @Neobin mentioned, the cloud-init maybe somehow installed on the PVE host, which explains why the /etc/hosts file gets reset at reboot, I would remove the cloud-init from the PVE host and fix the below files:

Code: 
- /etc/hosts
- /etc/hostname
- /etc/network/interfaces

Then you should reboot the PVE host.

Hopefully, that helps.
