Security best practices

Hi all, I'm pretty new to proxmox and have decided to use it for my home lab to run a few small services like pihole, unifi controller, home assistant, proxmox backup server, etc. I'm mildly dangerous with linux, but certainly no expert.

Anyhow, I'm looking for some security best practices across the board, both on pve and in containers/vms. Any that you might suggest would be appreciated.

One thing that has me puzzled is the use of root. I've watched a ton of videos, read through forums, and even been through the manual. It seems most don't use anything other than the root user, but I'm probably just really missing something.

I get that root has limited concerns on unprivileged containers, but is it really a best practice to use it?

What about on proxmox itself? Should I be setting up another user to use instead of root?

Thanks in advance.

You can use your root user without any problem! Just use a strong password and you can also setup the 2FA directly from ProxMox GUI!
Important thing don't put your ProxMox installation in front of Internet! Put in in local!
