Hi all,

I have a Proxmox server with 3 x HDDs:

- 1 x 480GB SSD with with 1 VM for 24/7 live cams recording.
- 2 x 10TB HDDs connected to another VM for 1 weekly backup. It only works 1 or 2 hours by week .

I would like to switch off mechanical HDDs with hdparm -Y /dev/sdb1 and it works ok, the HDDS go to sleep. But, after some minutes, HDDs wake up again and are spinning again. Why? Any VM has connected these HDDs. The only VM that has these HDDs, is switched off.

I would like to save life of these HDDs as these are working only 1h / week, so it's a non sense for me that they work 24/7.

Could you point me to understand or have any idea please?

Thank you in advance

Ok, thank you. I am not interested in usage etc. Can I disable these?
Disable the storage (deselect Enable in Datacenter > Storage > Edit), otherwise Proxmox will gather statistics. This can probably be automated using the Proxmox API or command line.
This has been asked before, so maybe a search of the forum might find you more complex work-arounds that you might like.

thank you but the disks wake up again... I have disabled the Storage but these still have been waking up. Could you point me for the other discussions please? I can't find the right information.

Thank you

Hello I really appreciate your help. But it doesn't help for me. I have tried:

- hdparm -Y /dev/sdc1 && hdparm -Y /dev/sdb1 manually
- disabling Storages in Proxmox
- edit /etc/lvm/lvm.conf and changing global_filter = [ "r|/dev/zd.*|", "r|/dev/mapper/pve-.*|", "r|/dev/sdc*|", "r|/dev/sdb*|"] where sdc1 and sdb1 are my HDDs + reboot proxmox or vgscan.

It worked but after 20-30 minutes, everything is waken again...

But I have not tried is auto-sleep like hdparm -S 240 /dev/sdc1, but I guess it should the same like manual sleep with hdparm -Y /dev/sdc1 right?
I mean the problem is not sleep... the problem is to control wake-up.

What do you think? I am almost our of ideas.

Thank you in advance!
