Hello,

I have setup a zentyal guest with raw as the file format for the guest OS. Zentyal inc samba file sharing. I would appreciate some feedback as the best way to organise the file sharing before I go copying 100Gb of files. The proxmox host does not have zfs as it's a mirror raid system.

I would like to support shadow copy for the Windows clients of the Samba server. I understand Samba requires a filesystem with snapshots.

I have created two additional disks for the samba guest as qcow2 format on the host ext4 directory. As qcow2 support snapshots from the proxmox host. I am assuming that shadow copy will be supported within the Samba guest. Is that correct?

or have I misunderstood and the file system is set within the guest not on the host ?

Thanks
Paul

No, qcow2 snapshots are block devices snapshots, samba need file based snapshots. They are incompatible.

Best approach for such a system to setup a VM, use ZFS therein and expose everything via samba. There are plenty of tutorials out there how to setup such a system and this is not related to the used virtualization (if any).
