Safely delete unnecessary files

For some reason, proxmox is eating up almost my entire disk and I can't figure out what is taking up so much.
I would like to ask you about files from which locations I can safely delete to free up space on the disk where PVE is installed?
Moreover, is apt autoremove completely safe and will not cause any boot problems after using it?
What is better to use apt clean or apt autoremove so that the use is 100% safe?
 
Both serve different purposes: apt clean clears the apt cache, which is a directory where Software packages are stored before they are installed. Running it is clean, wirst case that you will download a file again.
apt autoremove uninstalls packages which where only installed because some other package depended on them. This should be safe but it might happen that you installed Software outside of apt which still depends on it or you might want to keep it nontheless. So you should be careful and Look carefully which packages it will remove.

Concerning diskspace: Can you share a Screenshot of your disk and storage configuration in proxmox please?

A pve inst take just about 3GB ... most is just reserved for vm/lxc block storage use which so is shown as nearly full in node summery.

To safely delete files and dirs recursively, I use Midnight Commander. Consciously avoid the ' rm ' command.

' apt install mc ' - it's a clone of the old DOS Norton Commander, 2-pane text-mode file manager with a lot of features.

To delete a dir and everything under it, point at it and hit F8 (or ESC+8 on some terminals.)
To delete a selection of files, CTRL+T to Tag/Untag or '+' to tag a wildcard selection such as " *.jpg " (you can stack these) and then F8

For emergency purposes, for ext4 FS you can also issue ' tune2fs -m2 /dev/sdXX ' for the root device (in this case it would be LVM) to immediately free up some space. Up to you whether or not to put it back to the default 5% after cleanup.

How is this safer than rm? It's still up to the admin to consider which files can be removed or not. If I remove e.g. the kernel with mc and hit yes if mc ask me the system will still be broken.

They definitively should restore it to the default after the cleanup because the reserved space give some margin for emergency. It's not a good idea to remove this forever

Srsly? Do you have any idea how many sysadmins have accidentally destroyed their system / deleted critical files using rm at the commandline? It's the #1 system killer for *NIX, and DD is #2.

MC is a strong recommendation for people who don't want to inadvertently delete what doesn't need to be deleted, bc it gives you much more interactive control - but of course it can't protect against stupid if you deliberately delete your boot kernel.

I'm aware of the rm problem, because I also suffered pain because of it ;) I just don't agree that mc is answer to the OPs question since his problem as I understood it is that he isn't aware which files are safe to be removed in the first place and he doesn't know which stuff occupies his disk. If he has answers for that mc is a good idea (or using rm -i ) but at the moment he isn't even there.
