reuse Tape that has been used by VEEAM for tape backup

Hello fellow Proxmox Users,

i started today using Tape on PBS as well, but since i am coming from VEEAM i have a lot of tapes which have been written in a certain cycle by veeam. Is there any way how i can delete / Mark as free them to reuse in PBS.

i cant get a UUID from the preused tapes so i am not able to use the destroy command.

proxmox-tape media list gives no output

[ICODE]proxmox-tape media destroy --force can be used only with an UUID[/ICODE]

you have to put the tape into the drive and use

proxmox-tape format --drive <drivename>

and then you should be able to label it

thank you for the answer Dominik, can you please also let me know when i have a pool with Allocation Policy Always and Retention Policy Overwrite why the backup job just doenst use the tape that is loaded into the LTO Drive. It always expects a certain drive which is kind of annoying to not be able to do the logic when what tape is written manually.

AFAIR the tapes are ordered by least recently used and the oldest one available is used, for tapes that are 'equal' (e.g. they weren't used at all) the order in which they were labeled is used.
I would not rely on that though, since how we determine the next wanted tape is just an implementation detail an not fixed.

I would recommend looking at the gui for a backup job which tape will be requested before starting it if necessary
or alternatively just start and wait until you get an e-mail from the system telling you which tape you should insert

but maybe we could make that configurable or change the way we select tapes in that case, if you want that please open an enhancement request at https://bugzilla.proxmox.com so we can track that better (than here in the forum)

yeah i think you are right, at least now it looks for me as is. There is on the overview of all known tapes to the system a button where you can change the status of it:

can that be used to (first stop the running job as otherwise i wont get that information which tape it expects) say clear status so the job will take that specific tape which is physically loaded? or do i need to format and set a label each time?
