Subject: Retrieving VM on Proxmox from a non-functional mini PC

Hello Proxmox community,

I hope this message finds you well. I am currently facing a challenging situation and could use some guidance from the knowledgeable members of this community.

My Proxmox mini PC is unfortunately out of commission, and before sending it in for repairs, I took the precaution of removing the NVME hard drive. It is now in an external enclosure, connected to a Synology NAS to safeguard my data, including a VM running Home Assistant and an LXC container.

I am wondering if anyone has advice on the best way to retrieve this VM from the external NVME drive, considering that I have it connected to a Synology NAS. Are there specific steps I should follow to ensure a smooth transition to a new Proxmox environment once my mini PC is repaired?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and advice!

Best regards,

Put the NVMe SSD back in the new server, connect keyboard+display to edit the interface names in /etc/network/interfaces via local console to get the network working again.

Depends on your storage. When using LVM/LVM-Thin/ZFS there will be no image file containing the virtual disk of that VM that you could copy. They use block devices like LVs and Zvols. So here "dd" could help to copy stuff on block level. And a VM isn't just the virtual disk. You should also backup the config files in the "/etc" folder.

Easiest way to restore a VM is to always have a recent backup on another machine while everything is still running ;)

Thank you for your advice. However, currently, I cannot place the NVMe back into the new server as I haven't received it yet. Before doing that, I need to send the defective PC back to Amazon.

In the meantime, from the Synology, I've copied the content of the NVMe SSD, and here is the current content of the /etc/network/ file:

Code:
perlCopy code
default 0.0.0.0
loopback 127.0.0.0
link-local 169.254.0.0

Interestingly, when I managed to restart the mini PC with the hard drive, Proxmox was in rescue mode. Do you have any recommendations on how to proceed from here?
