I have 2 VM's which I would like to move/restore to a new host, which I will be building next week. I have current backups on a NAS. Is it just a matter of mounting the NAS resource to the new Prox box and restoring from there ? One is 6.4-9 the other is 6.4-4 .. comments appreciated.. thx in advance

Yes, just mount the share and do a restore.

You also might want to backup the content of the hosts /etc/pve folder to be able to restore firewall settings and so on.

So here is what I would like to do -- I have an Ubuntu 20 VM running some media server software. If I backup to NAS, I can restore from NAS, but there is no hard drive/bootable device after the restore...if I do this with a container, there is no plm. (A wordpress CT).

I cannot locate any guides for how to attach an existing hard drive to a newly restored VM ... is the backup of the hard drive a different process ?? I see I can move the original hd .. is this how to do it ? I know which directories etc need to be backed up on the media server, just looking for more of a 'turnkey' solution ...

Was thinking I cld use clonezilla to create image that cld be retored on second host, w/o need to move hard disk.. I am probably missing something (!) ...

What exaclty do you mean with "existing hard drive"? A virtual disk? A physical HDD pseudo passthroughed using "qm set"? A physical HDD PCI passthroughed into the VM? A folder stored on a HDD but bind-mounted into a LXC?

For virtual disks you can include/exclude them from the backup using the CLI. For physical HDDs you need to move the complete physical HDD from one server to the other one.

With LXCs bind-mounted folders will not be backuped. There you need to backup the folders by yourself.

The hard drive is the drive that was created originally...it is the VM's hard drive as originally created... Nothing exotic here with pass-through etc..

..I will investigate the correct syntax for using the CLI to include the hard drive in the creation of the backup...your advice will save me much time - thx.

WebUI will work too. Virtual disks should be included by default if you didn't uncheck the "backup" checkbox in the VMs hardware menu for that virtual disk.
