Hi Proxmox team
I'm fascinated with the work successful of Proxmox team :p

And please let me a questions:
Why Proxmox VE not support GlusterFS officially? or isn't on the roadmap?

About of GlusterFS:
1- GlusterFS is Open Source

2- Red Hat is sponsor of GlusterFS (strong support)
http://www.linuxtoday.com/storage/2012021000441NWRH

3- The GlusterFS Open Source Community consists of over 8000 user-developers:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluster

4- GlusterFS is mature and ready for enterprise-level requirements !!!
(While sheepdog and ceph aren't ready for systems on production)
http://gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/GlusterFS_General_FAQ

5- GlusterFS is supported by QEMU:
http://wiki.qemu.org/ChangeLog/1.3 (see the title "block devices")
http://www.gluster.org/2012/09/using-qemu-to-boot-vm-image-on-glusterfs-volume/

6- GlusterFS have graphical administration with oVirt
http://wiki.ovirt.org/wiki/Features/Gluster_Support
http://www.gluster.org/2012/07/inst...nfs-or-posix-native-file-system-node-install/

7- GlusterFS is supported by the best Software Open Source for the cloud: OpenStack with "Virtual Motion of the VMs"
http://www.openstack.org/blog/2011/07/announcing-the-gluster-connector-for-openstack/

8- The community of VMware want to use GlusterFS:
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/251176
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/170655

I'm not saying abandon support for "ceph" and "sheepdog", I only say that Proxmox VE on the GUI should include support for GlusterFS, the Cluster file system open source more mature and stable of all

If after saying this are not convinced, could put a "how to" by CLI about GlusterFS in the documentation of Proxmox VE 2.0?

In any case, thank you very much for do Proxmox VE

Best regards
Cesar

Current stable qemu is 1.2 (no direct gluster support).

Besides, it is simple to install and use glusterfs (using directory type storage). AFAIK, there are already some people using it. So if you want to use it, simply use it ;-)

Thank you Dietmar for your prompt response

But i don't know why Proxmox VE not support GlusterFS officially? or isn't on the roadmap?
Do you can answer me?

AFAIK glusterfs is not really designed to store large files like VM images (in next version?).
Also, there is no snapshot support (or do they have snapshots now?).
The plan is to re-test everything with the new driver in qemu 1.3.

Hi Dietmar

Excuse me but you are wrong, let me tell you:

1- About store large files:
In this link of GlusterFS Ver. 3.3 you will see: "Granular locking – Allows large files to be accessed even during self-healing, a feature that is particularly important for VM images." (in others words, GlusterFS is really ready for storage of VMs without loss in performance when a node requires synchronization)
http://www.gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/About33

2- About snapshot support:
In this link:
http://www.linuxplumbersconf.org/20...012/09/2012-lpc-virt-storage-virt-kvm-rao.pdf

On the page 8 you will see : Enabling GlusterFS for Virtualization use -> Logical volumes as VM images
On the page 11 you will see: "Provides VM thin provisioning and snapshots by leveraging
thin provisioning and snapshot features of LVM"

I'll be waiting for your answer

Best regards
Cesar

Perhaps it's best to just try it out, see what happens and record your experiences on the wiki.

Of course, you might want to sponsor/financially support the proxmox people to add official support for glusterfs if the benefits outweigh the alternatives...

as soon as gluster support is in KVM (maybe with 1.3), we will re-test. if you can´t wait, test by yourself.

Hi partner.

I'll just do a query:
Why offer support for storage systems that are not ready for use in production environments since there are other options that if you are ready?

Best regards
Cesar

Ok Tom, Thanks
And I want to add that no offense, I started this thread just to know Why Proxmox VE not support GlusterFS officially? or isn't on the roadmap?, knowing that GlusterFS is the solely system storage that really is ready for use in production environments, but it is only one question.

If I can test, I will be communicating about my tests, but I think it will be the medium/long term.

Best regards
Cesar

We do not offer support for such system - seems you miss-understand something.

So now that qemu 1.3 is available, what is the plan with glusterfs support? I have a been running Proxmox with the native fuse client for quite sometime with no issues, but the performance gains of the direct connection are hard to ignore. GlusterFS has also released a new 3.4 alpha that supports the tight integration. Time to get it on the roadmap?

haha - they announce that for several years now! My guess is that the design of the whole system is simply not suited to implement such features.

Seem that they will manage snapshots with lvm volumes as backend. (with dm-thinp for good performance, don't known if we have the support of dm-thinp in wheezy currently).
I have check the git code, they are already some pieces for manage it.

doc is here : https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/blob/master/doc/bd.txt

But yes, indeed, glusterfs was not created for this from the start (not like ceph or sheepdog).
I think that redhat is trying to do some kind of lvm replicated/cluster through glusterfs.

That whole thing looks like a dirty hack ...
