I currently have a development server running on a Dell PowerEdge. My plan is to upgrade memory and hard drives on this server and re-purpose it to be a ProxMox server. My dilemma is that I need to migrate or rebuild the current server into a virtual machine, then later import it back into the ProxMox server. I want to upgrade the OS anyway to a 64-bit OS, so I wouldn't mind rebuilding as opposed to a p2v solution. Actually, I would prefer a complete rebuild and a clean install anyway.
If I were to rebuild the server in a virtual environment, what would be recommended as far as feasibility of importing the rebuilt server into ProxMox, once the physical server is re-puposed? Also, would it make sense to do a p2v solution first, then rebuild later? The issue I have with that is that I may not be able to test the virtual server before importing.
I will note that my workstation is an Ubuntu desktop with VirtualBox installed. However, I'm not sure if that is a good route to take.
