I have one faulted drive in the mirror ZFS (4 drives 2plus2 config). Seems like something with cable or something, because it is new hw. Is there any way to fix/clean the drive without detaching it from the active pool or destroying the pool (it is huge 40 TB monster)?

zpool clear and a zpool scrub sometimes work, if the cause of the problem is corrected. Or you can also try a zpool resilver to rewrite the (used part of) the drive. Otherwise, you need to detach it and attach it again (make sure to attach it as a mirror to the correct drive), which is much like a resilver. Why is this problematic?

If the data is very important and to avoid/reduce risks during resilvering you may add a third drive to the mirror vdev. When resilvering is finished you may remove the problematic drive...
(Caution: do not add this additional drive as an independent vdev by accident!)

Best regards

Fortunately, with recent versions of ZFS, you can now remove vdevs without recreating the pool.
Okay, that's great!
Nevertheless: I am always careful when manipulating a pool and triple-check my commands - better safe than sorry. Maybe there are other pitfalls I am not aware of...

Best regards
