Remote User running ProxMox 2.2 need to update to 3.3 eventually.

I have had a call from an old friend, now moved interstate.
He is running Proxmox 2.2 with a couple of VM's (Windows).
I need to get him up to date, but first to 2.3 from 2.2.

What is the best way to tackle this?

I only have remote access to the site.

If you can, backup the VM, install fresh proxmox 3.3 and restore VM.

From other reading I didn't think that would work?
We do not have room to Backup, But we could copy the VM's and Cfg files to another drive, then install 3.3 and bring up the VM's.
Would this work?
