Hi,
first - if you don't upgrade from pve 1.x - there isn't an master node anymore... all nodes have an vote and for the cluster a quorum must reached.
You don't wrote from which version you want to upgrade to which version?! And what kind of storage do you use - so it's not easy to give some hints.
But to break the cluster, recreate an new one and join the other updated nodes again is normaly the right way.
