Recommended Ceph Versions?

Hi,

I am in the process of setting up a Ceph cluster and now I am asking myself the following questions.

During my research I came across the fact that newer Ceph versions also offer enhancements, e.g. for performance.
Since I assume that Ceph versions are extensively tested before they are integrated into Proxomox, would I choose the latest version for a new cluster?
Will this selected Ceph version be automatically updated when Proxmox VE is upgraded? Or is manual interaction necessary if the version is end of life?

Best regards

I can not give you a clear answer, since I do not use Ceph; but I want to leave some facts that might help with the decision, especially if no one else should answer.

  • The current major version, and also the only one that is not EOL, of PVE is 8: [1].
  • PVE 8 only supports Ceph 17/Quincy and 18/Reef: [2].
  • Ceph 17/Quincy was estimated (currently it is not, yet) to be EOL on 2024-06-01: [3].
  • Ceph 18/Reef is deemed stable from the Proxmox side since 2023-11-23: [4].
  • Major Ceph version upgrades need to be done manually: [5].
