Recommendations for offsite backup of small local PBS?

Hi, I have PBS running locally in a home environment and it'll be managing <1TB for now. I'm looking for a solution for offsite backups. Since my local pbs does all the versioning, I'm thinking my "remote send" can be pretty brain dead and just copy the whole pbs datastore directory or zfs dataset. Is this what others do? If that's true, than any place I can do a zfs send | zfs recv over ssh, or even an rsync over ssh should work?

Do you have any friends who homelab? Maybe you can set up a site to site VPN or even a tailscale network, and back your stuff up to your friend's lab and you do the same for your friend.

See my Post in this thread:

Please note that we now have more options for cloud pbs than tuxis.nl, another one is cloud-pbs and I remember that there is at least one other Provider although I can't recall the Name at the moment

Thanks for the link. Pricing out Hetzner, a 4vCPU 8GB VPS is 7.59USD + 4USD for a 1TB storage box. That's only $11.59!

I've used Hetzner dedicated plans for a project in the past, but never their shared plans and never the storage box. I assume you mount the storage box on your VPS via SMB or sshfs? Do you run into performance problems with PBS? I would start with about 600GB to back up once daily, doing verify, purge, and GC jobs once daily. After the initial backup, I'd like things to finish quickly so I'm concerned the about PBS on Hetzner dealing with SMB on Hetzner storage box being a problem.

I like this PBS on Hetnzer plan so far, I could ditch my current Linode VPS and replace it with the Hetzner one, which make this actually net cheaper even with the storage box!

Looking at netcup, they're similar, about $16.48, but they say the block storage is local, not an SMB mount.

Yes and that's the reason why I went with netcup instead of Hetzner. PBS works better with local storage instead of network file system:

And netcup is cheaper for the block storage than hetzner. That being said a storage box still has it's uses: You can use it for additional backups via vma-archives for additional security. I myself uses my netcup vserver for the backup of the vms and lxcs and my storagebox for my data backups (made with restic) and weekly vma backups of my most important lxcs and containers.

On the other hand 1TB at cloud-pbs.com runs for around 12 Euro, which would still be quite affordable and could also be used for such a dual strategy (cloud-pbs for VM/lxc, storagebox as additional storage in case cloud-pbs closes down).

Your mileage may varie :)
