Hi everyone, I need some help.

About seven days ago I added a 10 Gb LAN connection, and now I want to expand the network bandwidth on my Proxmox server.

I bought a WL‑NWU340GD (USB‑C → RJ45) adapter and configured it as the only network interface in Proxmox by editing /etc/network/interfaces. I also disabled USB autosuspend. It works for a while, but after some time the connection drops.

The same happens when it is working and I disconnect and reconnect the RJ45 cable — after that the adapter no longer works.

Can you suggest a 5 Gbps LAN interface that works reliably with Proxmox? i'm a really newbie so i would like some ootb interface.
Thanks

Hi,

Usually such devices very sensitive for overheat and unstable in high load.
You shouldn't expect some stable work with high load from type C adapters.
What options you consider?
Should it be USB‑C card only?

Hi,

What host system / type of USB port are you connecting to there?.

I've used a few of the USB to 2.5 / 5 / 10Gbps network adapters, and the older USB3.0 ports are not at all stable. I have around 5 different models of these NIC's sitting in draws now.
USB3.1 / 3.2 ports are more stable but even then not perfect.

Also the USB adapters use the Realtek chipset where Proxmox loads the default cdc driver instead of the Realtek specific driver (that has to be installed manually)
Refer to this page for the installation of the correct Realtek driver: https://github.com/awesometic/realtek-r8152-dkms#

If your system has a WiFi (or spare NVMe) slot, then I suggest that you purchase the Wifi/M.2 to network adapter, they function far better (and more reliably) as they cut out the USB interface from the path. I have 2.5 / 5 & 10G NIC's connected via PCIe M.2 slots in a number of mini PC's here, as the WiFi slot is not used in Proxmox.
