Hello everyone. I had the oppurtunity to finally upgrade my aging work stations for myself and the wife and withj System 76 and I have a Meerkat and Thelio on the way!

That being said, I now have 2 desktops with fully operational hardware that I want to either combine into one Prox Mox server or into a cluster. The idea here is to get some more HDs during upcoming black friday sales and use all the SATA ports I can! I want to use ZFS and I want to pretty much create my own intranet/solution for my home and want it Prox Mox running the show, it will be an excellent learning experience and I haven't really tinkered with computer stuff in about a decade.

Here is the hardware I am working with for this Prox Mox project. What will make the most sense? How do I use what I have i the most effective manner? Considering the old SSDs as redundant boot drives. Will use the 850 EVOs as cache for Plex or perhaps some VMs as well. Not sure about VM vs containers/docker yet...

Below is what I ULTIMATELY want to be setup with, this will be a many years project and this is PHASE I. I understand I will have to buy some hardware....HDs, HBA's compatible with ZFS and a dedicated NIC if I go cluster route.

Things I will run with Prox Mox~
UniFi controller
PFSense
Plex
Whole home ad block
CentOS Servers for various purposes
Seed Box
MS-DOS Box
Prox Mox Mail Gateway or another Mail Server
Web Server
Free PBX /w Google Voice

What do you guys think I should do? Make a cluster? Make 1 Prox Mox and 1 UnRaid or FreeNAS perhaps? Thanks!

Our system requirements give you an overview of what we recommend for productions systems.
You should have an additional device if you go for the cluster route.

It depends a lot on how serious this is for you. We generally recommend enterprise grade SSDs for example. However, cheaper solutions might be sufficient as long as it is really only about "learning and tinkering". Thus, I personally would just install Proxmox VE on the two machines and start experimenting. I think this will already clear up some of your questions.
