I'm building a proxmox server and looking for a recommendation on raid solution. CPU is i7-3770K. I've decided to go with two 512 GB SSDs raid 1 for boot and VMs and two 4 TB Toshiba N300s RAID 1 for data. I will be running two Win Server 19 VMs with one being a SQL server. I'd like to give as much ram to the SQL box as possible. Question is should I use mdadm for the software raid to save ram or go with zfs?

Use hardware RAID or (not "and"!) ZFS, mdadm is not supported from Proxmox.

Thanks I was not considering hardware raid. Question was mdadm vs ZFS. I ended up giving btrfs a try
I use both BTRFS & ZFS for RAID-1 for the OS boot drives.

For the VMs, I use ZFS (local) & Ceph (distributed).
