Question to PBS functionality - running VM while doing backup

OK, so I have PVE and PBS combo on premise on my machines. And now I will have probably stupid question, but when I have VM running backup, I was thinking I cannot work with it. Recently I found out, that I am able to run backup and have the VM running. Is it ok? Are the backups safe? And please forgive my complete ignorance in this.

Yes, you can run backups while the VM is running. The system is designed to provide safe backups while the VM is running (using snapshots) .
