Question about VM Migration in Proxmox using iSCSI Storage

Hi everyone,

I’ve done some research but haven’t found a solution to my specific issue. I have experience with ESXi at work and recently started using Proxmox in my lab, with the hope of eventually migrating it to my work environment.

Here’s my setup:
  • Two physical Proxmox nodes
  • A Qdevice voter running on Docker on a QNAP
  • Shared storage using iSCSI, connected to both nodes and divided into LUNs.
The issue arises when I try to migrate a VM from one node to another. Proxmox seems to recreate the disks during migration, and due to limited space, the migration fails with an error. In contrast, with vMotion on ESXi, only the hardware (bare metal) changes during the migration, and the storage remains intact.

Is this the expected behavior in Proxmox, or am I missing a configuration step to avoid the disk recreation?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Hi @zyled , welcome to the forum.

The PVE is doing what you've configured it to do. It sounds like your expectations do not match your current configuration. To get a better answer, you'd need to provide more information:
- storage configuration: cat /etc/pve/storage.cfg
- running storage configuration: pvesm status
- vm configuration: qm config [vmid]
- pve version: pveversion
- storage presence: lsblk
- storage listing: pvesm list [storage]

perhaps more
