I am trying to compare Proxmox to Unraid on my setup, which is a Dell Precision Tower with 2 x 18TB SATA, 1 x 14TB SATA, 1 x 1TB NVMe, and 1 x 512GB NVMe
What I had done with Unraid was an array of the 3 SATA drives with cache using the 1TB NVMe, and then I am using the 512GB NVMe as a passthrough for a Windows VM. I will be running around 20 VM's or so. With Unraid it was JBOD more or less. But I've been using Proxmox for a lot longer than Unraid and I prefer it, so I'm trying to make this work.
I can't find a good guide on how to set this up. Near as I can tell, it sounds like ZFS is the way to go about this but, that expects drives of same size, so I'd lose 8TB if I make a ZFS pool of the 3 drives. Another direction I can do is that I figured out how to make 2 drives with XFS or EXT4, one LVM is 1 x 14TB and the other is 36TB (2 x 18TB). But from here, it's really not evident how to use the 1TB NVMe as cache for either or both things. I would really prefer it to cache for all the SATA drives.
I don't mind if I have one 14TB disk and one 36TB disk if it comes to it, if I can just get cache working. In a perfect world, I would end up with 50TB + cache but...
Anyway, can someone please help me do this the right way? It's much appreciated!!
