Hi all,

Just looking for views of SAS vs NVMe for guest storage in current times, to get an idea of what makes the most sense with a potential system build:

This is the compatibility matrix we've been sent about the options. SAS 24G @ 15.36TB per drive seems wise to me.

From there, another restriction is the backplane type which offers 2 types of NVMe:

• Up to 16 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA/NVMe (HDD/SSD) drives max 61 TB
• Up to 8 x E3.s NVMe SSD drives max 288 TB

NVMe E3/Gen5 seems to imply more speed, but limits the max storage despite the max being far larger than the 16x disk backplane - odd.
(Also, it seems they talk with Gen5 online - re: speeds - that the IOPS are amazing, but speed seemed lacking compared to SAS 24G? Unsure.)

Would be great to get wisdom from the community about what works best, especially in the case of Proxmox VE guest storage.

I've had good experiences with SAS SAS, and 24Gbps seems a no-brainer, though would like to check firstly!

(Proxmox would be on the BOSS Card 2x M2 in RAID1 storage - so this is a guest-only query)

Thanks,
Linux
