hi members,

i am presently administering a proxmox cluster with three dell r750 server with all nvme storage with BOSS card where proxmox is installed version 7.4, now the new version 8 released, but i am quite confused to migrate to version 8 or wait for few more month, as there is some mission critical server is running from the cluster, if any reason the cluster broke during upgrade, first thing will happen i will be out of job, so need some moral support from experienced member to proceed for the upgrade or wait few more month for more stability......

"To be or not to be that is the question" .......... Hamlet ...... Shakespeare :(

Hello, from our point of view this is as good as any moment to port your cluster to 8.0.

Having said that, make sure you do backups and test the upgrade in a testing cluster/machine if you have one. You can also upgrade a single node first and test if everything works before porting the other nodes, should anything break you can revert that single node without having downtime.

hi, thanks for the reply and giving a support for my effort to upgrade. all the vm in the cluster are in ceph storage (Quincy) should i move these vm to local storage before going for the upgrade ? is that any help, there is two set of nvme in all the server configured as zfs mirror, and two each on all the server is on ceph pool ? any guidance will be appreciated.

Hello, no there is no need to move the Ceph storage. You can do the upgrade one machine at a time, they will rejoin the cluster even with the version mismatch. All your nodes are already running the same Ceph version (Quincy) so there are no issues in this regard.

While having version mismatches in a cluster is not supported, it is still functional enough. If you encounter any problem with the web UI try accessing it with the node on the latest version.

Please read *carefully* our upgrade guide [1].

Remember to test carefully once you upgrade the first node. Should anything go wrong, you can still revert this node to 7.x.
