In the end I installed 6.4 and upgraded to 7.0. Have you tried the 7.1 ISO? Is the issue still present? Unfortunately it is not fixed upstream yet so I guess it is still there.

6.4 also works for us with the installation here, a collage will try to perform some firmware updates and then try to install 7.1.

Definitely, the Proxmox 7.1.1 ISO won't work still, complaining about missing ast_dri.so and the ast module. No dice, it just won't work. Tried to install ast-dkms, didn't work as well.

The issue is for sure ast.

I had the same issue with X server crashing on SuperMicro AS-4124GS-TNR which has AST 2500 as well.
I was able to resolve by disabling gl-related modules and the modesetting driver.
