I have a 1.3 cluster set up already. I'd like to upgrade it to 1.8, but I have a few qemu images I want to make sure work in 1.8 first.

If I introduced a 1.8 to my 1.3 cluster would they work okay? Would I be able to migrate my qemu image over to test it?

Of course I'd do the testing in a test group, but to save myself possibly hours of frustrating work I figured I'd ask here first to get a sense for the feasibility of this.

Also, I'm running a dozen or so openvz instances, but I am assuming that those would work just fine? It's really the qemu one I'm most worried about.

Thanks,

Var.

no one tested 1.3 with 1.8 in one cluster, not recommended. I suggest you just test your VM on a single 1.8 host.

FWIW, I've upgraded my cluster version to version since 1.1 or something. It's always worked well. If anything, OpenVZ has given me more issues than KVM/Qemu. That said, I've never made a big version leap like you are asking about, though.

Just an idea if you don't have a spare machine: Why don't you break your cluster, upgrade one machine, test, and if it works fine, upgrade the other machine(s) in the cluster and rejoin the machine to your cluster?

I've got three spare machines I'm going to test it with this week. Tenatively planning on doing something very similar. I really only let them go this long because everything's been working great and the last time I did an update I somehow broke mdadm on my boot partition.

I really should be more proactive about keeping the cluster up to date, though.
