I did not test if any previous kernel versions are free from this bug.
If vm.hugetlb_optimize_vmemmap=1 is set, then don't try to shrink hugepage pool at runtime. The pages will be gone until reboot and you'll see a kernel error.
PVE might shrink the hugepages pool at VM stop under certain condition. Use keephugepages: 1 to disable that.
