Proxmox VM restarts when loading game (fortnite)

Hi,

I have a Dell PowerEdge r720, with two Intel E5-2643 CPUs @3.30 GHz (130w TDP). After replacing them from E5-2630l v2 @2.4 GHz (60w TDP), for gaming performance.

Now when I load games the VM shuts off and reboots. This may be caused by the CPU not being supplied with enough power, yet I have two 750w power supplies, and the server never consumed more than 250w.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Only the VM reboots or the whole server?

If it's the whole server you might have some hardware issues. If it's only the VM you will have to look somewhere else. If it reboots right away you will have to check within the VM what is going on. If the VM just dies and you have to start it again, you can check on the PVE server what's happening.

In the latter case I would check the syslogs on the PVE server. One likely cause could be that you overcommitted memory and that the OOM killer acted on the VM once it started to use too much memory.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your fast reply!

It could be a memory issue, but there's ~40gb and this is the only machine on. I've included a screenshot of the machine settings, if this helps.

The syslog looks pretty dull, and the only line that appears after the machine reboots is:
"[2724]: vcpu1, guest rIP: 0xfffff8057f79dd82 kvm_set_msr_common : MSF_IA32_DEBUGCTLMSR 0x1, nop"

I'm not exactly sure what this means!

Thanks
