Hi,

why do you want to stay on Debian 9.4?

A selective update has to be done manually and is not supported by Proxmox.

Yes for example bug fixes, that is also the reason why you should update.

How so, honestly interested? Normally, a Debian point release should be very unproblematic regarding breakage as they just bundle security updates and some bug fixes in there, no package itself gets upgraded to a new (upstream) release.
Proxmox based packages are much more rolling upgrade, but the ones based on Debian are really stable.
