Sharing this it case it can help someone. I spent quite some time on this.
Scenario:
- ProxMox VE server 7.2-7 (server name: a72b)
- ProxMox Backup Server 2.1-1 (server name: a72c)
- TrueNAS Server 12.0-U8.1 serving SMB shares (server name: u22)
- Ubuntu 20.04 LTS server (server name: a72d)
- TrueNAS Server has separately credentialed user accounts enabled for SMB login with the same name as the corresponding server:
--- User acct a72b
--- User acct a72c
--- User acct u22
--- User acct a72d
I was able to mount the SMB shares from the TrueNAS server to each of the above servers with this server name = username scheme, until I got to the ProxMox VE server. The SMB mount refused to happen when I used a user name (a72b) which was the same as the server name (a72b) (Error = -13, Permission denied). This error occurred whether mounting from the command line or from an edited /etc/fstab. I could use the other credentials as well to mount the SMB share from the ProxMox VE server - it only failed when the user name was the same as the server name.
I changed the account username on the TrueNas server to a72bx (from a72b) and was able to log in from the ProxMox VE server without issue using username a72bx with the same password that I had used with username a72b.
I thought I had hit some concurrent user default or something on the TrueNAS server but this was not the case.
In summary: the problem has been avoided by using a username which was different than the server name to mount the SMB share. No idea why only from the ProxMox VE server though.
