Hi All,

I want to deploy a PVE 9 cluster with some Dell R660SX nodes, using SAS HBA directly connected to a Dell ME5024 storage array. I am unsure if the SAS-connected storage will be treated as shared storage, such as iSCSI/FC. Can we still deploy shared LVM/LVM-Thin volumes on the LUNs presented via SAS to support snapshots for VM backups? We plan to use our existing Veeam Backup server to connect to the PVE nodes and provide backups (Migrating away from VMware).

It would be great if I could get some confirmation that this would be supported as shared block storage.

Hi @michael.v , welcome to the forum.

yes it will be.
Can we still deploy shared LVM
Yes
LVM-Thin volumes on the LUNs presented via SAS
No. LVM-Thin is not compatible with shared-storage application.

Veeam for PVE does not use storage level snapshots. You will be able to use Veeam.

Yes, it should work. PVE relies on underlying Linux OS (Debian with Ubuntu derived Kernel) for basic storage recognition and operations.
The higher layer is LVM. This is where PVE9 has implemented snapshots (as technology preview).

You can skip over the iSCSI related portions. Once your OS sees the disks (sdX), the remaining steps are the same.
