Hi good people.

I have assambled new proxmox server, and can't install proxmox ve 6 on it. When i start installation it simply stops before starting GUI installer part and don't starts xorg (or starts, but i see only freezed cli installer output). Actually i found that installer works, but somehow it don't enters GUI installation part or don't shows it. I assume thare is radeon driver problem. I am using radeon r5 230 vga and HDMI output. I have tried to blacklist radeon module or set nomodeset option to kernel but without success. When i set nomodeset or blacklist radeon module, i see error about KMS that can't use drm. Xorg stops with error about radeonframebuffer. I know that this errors are linked with kernel options i set - blacklisterd radeon or nomodeset. But without this options i can't see anything. Now i know that installer are getting to GUI part but don't know why it freezes. This is strange, because proxmox 5.4 or debian 10 i can install without problem. And in proxmox 5 and in debian 10 i see working xorg GUI part with default options and with nomodeset option. All works fine. Please, i need any recommendations about kernel parameters to start with radeon vga. As last resort i can install debian 10 and convert to pve, but i don't know will it be supported by proxmox stuff because we got 4 server licenses for pve servers. Of course i can try to change vga adapter, but i don't have nvidia vga now.

Server based on HP Z420 workstation (xeon e5-2650v2/32GB DDR3 ECC/ 2x HDD/ 2x SSD/) and radeon vga for only video output.

Thx.

It will, just mention that you need to use Debian installer as of an issue with your HW and the 6.0 ISO at the time.

This is strange, because proxmox 5.4 or debian 10 i can install without problem. And in proxmox 5 and in debian 10 i see working xorg GUI part with default options and with nomodeset option.

The underlying issue could be that 6.0 tries to use native drivers for GPUs to resolve some issues with resolutions we had reported in the past, where we enforced/supported VESA only.

On booting, can you try to add the following to the kernel boot comand line: vga=791 and see if it works then?
check out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions#Linux_video_mode_numbers for possible better fitting "number" (mode).

I have tried all methods and vga=xxx - no results. I think the problem is with hardcoded into the kernel native radeon driver. I can't disable it, because when i use nomodeset KMS drm crushed xorg with error. When i use radeon driver - i simply got no image. I have managed to deal with problem by temporary installing nvidia gpu, and after installation swapped back to radeon.

Btw, i think the best way is to use vesa mode by default, because proxmox is not workstation, it's virtualization server, so no need to use nvidia or radeon drivers with hardware acceleration. Sometimes we use server paltform without integrated gpu, and we need cheapest hole plug with passive cooling. Nvidia/Radeon is not so important, but very important to have straight installation process without problems.
