Can this new ISO be used to load the new system in-place over the top of an existing installation or is a backup and restore required? How will it impact the current OS partition and ZFS pool?

This is for installing on a new system.
For a running system you only need to use those 2 commands to update to the latest version

apt-get dist-upgrade
Or apply the updates via GUI.

OK. This will work for machines with commercial subscriptions. Can servers with out a subscription be updated in-place with the ISO?
If you have no subscription, just use the pve-no-subscription repo.
