Dear All,

Im using Dell Server PowerEdge, before adding in the new hard drives , the setup is 2 virtual disk disk ( 1 is meant for OS installation while the other is meant for data)
I have attached the screenshot which show the disk in sdb
sdb 8:16 0 29.1T 0 disk
└─sdb1 8:17 0 29.1T 0 part /mnt/pve/data2

After I add in the new hard drives and configure to virtual disk 2 which is in raid 6. I can see the additional disk size has increased for virtual disk 2 (from 29TB to 44TB) in BIOS. thus can i assume that the proxmox sdb will be increase to 44TB?

However when i log in to proxmox, i don't see any difference
1) there is no new hard drive appear
2) the existing sdb still reflect as 29.1T

Thank you

Dear All,

After I reboot the system, i can see the increased size of ( 2 * 8TB) from 32TB to 48TB

how do i extend the increase storage in my existing partition (ext4) which is mounted as /mnt/pve/data5

From the main pve under disk management view :
/dev/sdb -> 48TB
- /dev/sdb1 ext4(mounted)-> 32TB
the mounting point for /dev/sdb1 is /mnt/pve/data5

root@svr-pve-01:~# df -Th
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb1 ext4 29T 18T 11T 63% /mnt/pve/data5
/dev/sda2 vfat 511M 340K 511M 1% /boot/efi

Any advise?

Thank you

Dear LnxBil,

As I'm new to proxmox , getting more confused in reading Longer version

Short:
  • increase your partition size sdb1 ( how about this?)
  • resize your fs ( are you referring to resize2fs /dev/sdb1
To confirm, I have added 2 extra hard drives to existing raid 6 , this new changes has reflected in proxmox.
sdb1 is in ext4 and mounted as /mnt/pve/data2 . How do i increase this to the max (with the data intact ) . Do I need to unmount sdb1 ?

sdb 8:16 0 43.7T 0 disk
└─sdb1 8:17 0 29.1T 0 part /mnt/pve/data2

Thank you

Do I need to unmount sdb1 ?
It's online resizing, so no.

What exactly? The longer version shows the exact two programs you need to run.

First, you need to check if the change (adding two disks) is already visible, by looking at the current partition layout:
Code:
fdisk -l /dev/sdb

and look at the numbers. If that's not the case, you need to check with your RAID controller and probably increase the volume size there (not part of PVE and we cannot help with that)

If everything is ok, do as follows (ON YOUR OWN RISK):
  • do a df -PHT /dev/sdb1
  • backup everything and be prepared for any recovery action.
Changing the filesystem layout may always break something, so be prepared and the next steps are ON YOU OWN

  • growpart /dev/sdb 1
  • resize2fs /dev/sdb1
  • do another df -PHT /dev/sdb1
you should see the change.

Next time, don't create partitions, they are not useful in a data-only block device in which you would only have one partion on it. Besides Windows, no other system I know needs them for data-only (non-os-related stuff) filesystems. In such a setup, you would only need the resize2fs part (half the programs to run and half the complexity)
