Hello
My plan is to backup my VMs then reinstall my server with new proxmox installation then restore VM again
My question is that after reinstall shall VM have the same machine IDs as before reinstall?
also my control panel create users and passwords which are used to manage machines from client portal. so when i do backup and restore from proxmox GUI will proxmox backup these data or note
I think data in files
1- user config => /etc/pve/users.cfg
2 - vm config at /etc/pve/qemu-server/...
please note names of storage in new proxmox installation shall be different than the old storage names which in vm config files in above mentioned point no.2
any advice to avoid problem

notes
Another way is to rent server create cluster then do migrate then re migrate after reinstall. shall that solve all problems?

hi,

I think data in files
1- user config => /etc/pve/users.cfg
2 - vm config at /etc/pve/qemu-server/...
those files aren't backed up automatically.
if you want everything to be the same you can just backup everything under /etc/pve, but the most important ones would be:
* /etc/pve/users.cfg
* /etc/pve/lxc/ and /etc/pve/qemu-server directories (VM configs)
* /etc/pve/storage.cfg (your VM configs will point to the old storage names, so this might be needed)

you also need your VM disks, it would make sense to place them in a network storage for easier transfer later.

please note names of storage in new proxmox installation shall be different than the old storage names which in vm config files in above mentioned point no.2

you can edit your VM configurations to reflect the changed storage name. try grep -R myoldstorage /etc/pve to see which lines you'll need to edit. you could use sed tool for replacing those (but be careful, don't do this on the original files without backup!)

hope this helps

Hello
Thanks for your answer
I got another idea which is to rent another cheap server, install proxmox backup server then do backup and then restore after re-installation then I will need only user file
