[SOLVED] Proxmox re-install

Hey! is there a way for me to reinstall just the proxmox os and not touch the VMs my setup is that i have two drives in raid for the os and the rest is the storage for my VM's

Hi Sandtech,

yes, this is possible to re-install existing machine, run an backup off every machine you wanne have on the existing machine.
Then you need download these backup's tho you're own pc and re-install proxmox then upload these again.
An restore these steps normal works

Setup and run the bkpcrit script to separate media / NAS. This will backup your VM configs and other critical files.

After reinstalling Proxmox, setup your storage and network, then restore critical files (details are in the script) - as long as the storage is defined the same way then the GUI should auto-populate.

You may have to do a ' qm rescan ' to reattach disks to VMs after restore, I have not tested this. And I take NO RESPONSIBILITY for data loss - it is your duty to sufficiently protect your data.

This is a "suggested" shortcut method if you don't want to do the "safest" thing, which is backup all the VMs and restore them after OS reinstall + network and storage setup. YMMV, try at your own risk.

The problem is that the os wil no longer boot correctly, and i don't know if a backup was made

Do a test reinstall onto another disk. Or boot into a rescue environment and make sure you copy the critical files out. As long as the VMs are on separate storage and you define that storage the same way in the new install, you should have a minimum of fuss.

A full reinstall onto separate disk (even a temporary usb disk) should give you a good idea of what to do in order to restore the full primary environment.

If you think you can't handle this DR job on your own, I encourage you to buy a support subscription and file a ticket with Proxmox. Or search around and hire a consultant

Okay new update here, I got the system to boot but and all the VM,s are also booting but i can't access either SSH or the WebUI and when i try to ping i just get the error message "Request timed out"

And if go to my monitoring service i get all the statistics of the server with out any problems

Login to the TTY console, it should tell you what IP address it's listening on.

Then you see if the bridge settings are correct in /etc/network/interfaces, then troubleshoot if the ssh daemon is running

Sorry forgot to update the thread. I solved the problem by updating the proxmox version from 6.x.x to 8.2.2, then it solved the problem

Can you share how did you do that without a full reinstall? I am facing similar situation and is desperately looking for a solution. For whatever reasons my update broke the proxmox, I can SSH into the server but cant access through web and can't manage any workloads through command line.
