Hello everyone,

I wanna use my old computer (Intel I7 3770k, 16GB memory) to host some VMs to start learning more about Linux and just for testing purposes in general.

A friend told me about Proxmox and after some research I got intreged with it. However I have 3 questions regarding the installation of Proxmox:

#1 In my old computer I have a SSD of 256GB and a HDD of 2TB. Is it wise to install Proxmox on the 256GB SSD and then let it create containers/VMs on the HDD (if this is possible)?

#2 Currently the old computer has Windows 7 installed on the SSD. If I install Proxmox, will it be formatted first? I didn't see this anywhere, so I just want to make sure if I don't need to format the SSD in advance.

#3 Is it gonna be an issue to do this on my old computer as it isn't really a server, hardware wise

Thanks in advance for reading and (maybe) answering.

Hello,

#1 - Yes it is possible. Once PM installed on the SSD, connect to the GUI and add the HDD as a local storage (directory/lvm/... your choice).
#2 - You'll be prompted during install to use the whole disk (or partition it yourself if I remember). Every "old" partitions will be wiped out in the process.
#3 - Your computer is more than enough to play with several VMs/Containers, 8 threads (as much vCPU), 16GB. PM won't use more than ~20GB on the SSD, the remaining +200GB will be configured as local storage for images. This way you'll be able to use fast and "slow" storage types as well.
