Hello everybody,

I'm new at using proxmox.
I\m using a gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 motherboard a Intel i5 4440 and 32Gb memory
I installed proxmox on a samsung ssd 240Gb evo

I have 6 nic's 2 single realtek and 2 dual nic intel

I have 1 VM (20Gb) running with 1 socket/1 core and 2Gb of memory/ It is running pfSense

I have 1 VM (32Gb) running with 1 socket/1 core and 2Gb/8Gb of memory/ It is running MS Server 2012

I have 1 VM (32Gb) running with 1 socket/1 core and 512Mb/2Gb of memory/ It is running unbuntu server 14

It is all running stable

But now my problem,
I want to install FreeNAS on a VM(8Gb) 2 sockets/2 cores and 4Gb/16Gb of memory
even if i do a bare install, no passthrough no extra nic's
Just on more proxmox hd with 32Gb to store the FreeNAS jails.

I've tried FreeNAS 9.3 stable and the latest 9.1 stable. But when i get it installed it keeps on crashing.
Mostly it will noteven install because the VM status tells me there was an internal error.

It can even result in a total crash of proxmox.

I there some one how can tell me what i'm doing wrong or a step by step how to install Freenas. I do need to add some drive using passthrough because i have to use drives with old data.

I;ve been trying for 2 weeks and looking over the net using our friend Google.

I hope there is someone how can assist me to get FreeNAS running stable on my ProxmoxBox

You must add intel_iommu=on to the grub configuration (/etc/default/grub).
Find the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in this file and add intel_iommu=on.
After adding you should have something like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="intel_iommu=on elevator=deadline"
The elevator=deadline should also be present since you are running on SSD.

After adding this to /etc/default/grub you need to run: update-grub and reboot

I assum i have to do this on the command line of the Proxmox it self.
No in the FreeNAS VM.

Btw thnx for the quick responce!

I;m doing a stress test now, but it looks good.

2 weeks of trail and error to find it is just updating one line of code!
LOL i will remember this fix for a long time...but will not remember it when i need it again!!!

Noop.....

Still FreeNas is bringing down the complete system.

While copying big number of files the system crashes.
First I thought it was because of a bad drive. But even with one new drive it still does not want to work.

do i have to set the cpu to host? or is there one other line of code i have to edit to make it run stable?

I've tried it with 9.3 and the latest 9,1.

I'm pulling my hairs here!!!!! And i don't have many left

Which nics do you have passed through to FreeNAS (the realtek or intel nics)?

Can you paste the contents of the vm config file found under /etc/pve/qemu-server/

at the moment i have one port used by the VM.
But I want to link 2 ports

The port I use is one of a intel dual nic

Is it posible to passthrough the port directly, and not through the VM brigde?

Note: I've dailed down the memory from 16 to 8 Gb and it seems it is running more stable now.
I will replace 2 of the sticks ot see if it is a bad memory isseu.
But i'm still looking for the best setting for my NAS :)

after 20hours running files copying system crach.(i was even unable to restart)
Swapped out 2 memory stick and nucked the vm.
re-installed vm with 16Gb of ram en cpu set to kvm64(default)
Now running file transport again, i have 1Tb of data to transfer so it's a nice test!

Following the content of the file
