hi all,

I'm building my first proxmox server and this are the parts I'll be using:

(have old one) Gigabyte B760M H
(have old one) i5-13500
(have old one) 2x 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Kingston Fury Renegade CL13
(have old one) Nvidia GTX 1660 6G
(new one) 4x 4TB hdd ( only for storage )
(nex one) 1x m.2 1TB ( for installing proxmox and VM's )
later will put and 10gb network card

It will be used mostly for photo storage and sharing links and probably will install nextcloud+photo and maybe few more VM's :) . But I'm seeing lotsoff putting freenas on proxmox and than dockers or using the apps on the freenas for something like this. I have old Synology ds212j and i will be using it for backup snapshots from proxmox.

So my question is: what is the best way to setup the raid for the HDDs. If i install freenas as VM on proxmox to passthrough all 4 hdds or .... ?

When using ZFS it's highly recommended to:
1.) not use SMR HDDs (but CMR HDDs and ideally with additional SSDs as "special" vdevs)
2.) not use consumer grade SSDs (but enterprise grade with power-loss protection)

So keep that in mind when buying new disks in case you want to make use of TrueNAS or software raid on PVE.

And yes, passthrough would be the way to go. Ideally using PCI passthrough to passthrough a whole HBA PCIe card with all the NAS disks attached to it. If that is not possible disk passthrough would be an alternative.

And I personally would buy more RAM as you are already on the lower side. I would give that TrueNAS VM at least 16GB RAM, some GBs for the PVE host and there isn't much RAM left for other VMs. so you might want to upgrade the RAM later on.
