Proxmox mount HDD Storage from other Proxmox Node in Cluster

Hello everyone,

The following scenario:

I have a cluster of 3 Proxmox nodes.
2 nodes only have SSD storage, the third node also has HDD storage.

I need to assign virtual discs to VMs running on Node 1 and Node 2, while the virtual disc are located on the HDD storage of Node 3.
This would of course only be additional storage for pure data. The operating system of the VMs always runs on the SSDs.
Local storage is not possible in this particular case, it HAS to be the HDD storage of Node 3.

I have already tried to mount a folder on the HDD storage via NFS. Unfortunately, the performance is too poor and the virtual disc is clearly too slow.
Whilst researching, I came across this solution: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage:_ZFS_over_ISCSI
Is this a suitable option?
If not, what is best practice in such a case?

Additional information:
All servers are connected with Gigabit.
All servers are running ZFS.

Thanks for your help!

Hi @arden666 , welcome to the forum.

The HDDs are not known for exemplary performance. You may be able to configure ZFS/iSCSI scheme. It would require significantly more effort than the NFS you've already tried. However, you are unlikely to see any perceivable performance improvement with ZFS/iSCSI vs NFS, given your hardware constraints.

We don't know what "slow performance" means to you, nor what your ideal performance looks like. You are going to need to measure things methodically, identify bottlenecks, and likely invest in your infrastructure to make gains.

Good luck
