Hi,
I know that its perfectly possible to install Proxmox over Debian. But I have some questions:

1. As I can understand that when I'll install proxmox, debian kernel will be replaced to newer one. Will such install replace some other older debian packages? Will I encounter some additional restrictions looking from debian perspective for example if I want also use host as ordinary server for simple tasks?
2. Install doc says to remove install repository when installation will finish and that proxmox enterprise repository will be added also? Do I need this repository at all if I do not have subscription key?
3. What is correct way to upgrade such proxmox installation to next major Debian version?

Thanks.

Hi,

Installing the proxmox-ve package will remove and install alot of dependencies. Also don't forget to really remove the old Debian kernel (even if the tutorial marks this as optional) or and "apt dist-upgrade" might want to remove your PVE package to be able to update the Debian kernel.
Will I encounter some additional restrictions looking from debian perspective for example if I want also use host as ordinary server for simple tasks?
In the end PVE is a modified Debian, so you can basically run everything on it like a normal Debian. But in general you don't want to run services on an hypervisor itself except for stuff like monitoring/logging tools that really need that low level access. For services you got LXCs.
2. Install doc says to remove install repository when installation will finish and that proxmox enterprise repository will be added also? Do I need this repository at all if I do not have subscription key?
Looks like "pve-install-repo.list" is actually the no-subcription repo. So I guess in case you don't got a subscription key you should keep the "pve-install-repo.list" and remove the enterprise repository instead.
3. What is correct way to upgrade such proxmox installation to next major Debian version?
PVE needs a specific Debian version to work. PVE 6 for example needs Debian 10, PVE 7 needs Debian 11.X. So you need to check new PVE releases and if it requires a Debian major upgrade (like switching from PVE 6 to 7) you upgrade your Debian and PVE at the same time to the new major version. This is very good documented like here for example.
