Hi there,

I did try to install proxmox on my test server. Due to fact I don't have a optical drive in there I did use this usb stick workaround.

Installation did obviously work, but problem is now, proxmox does come up, the one and only I see on the connected Display is "Starting Operating System ..." and machine is not accessable nor ping-able.

HW:

- Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 (AMD740G)
- Phenom II 910e (4x 2,6GHz)
- 2x 2GB DDR3-1666
- HP SmartArray P400/256MB
- 2x WD10EADS @ Raid1

Any ideas or suggestions?

What I remember from installation is, it did unusal long to create filesystems. One this machine normally a thing from seconds, did take minutes ...

Hi there,

nobody any idea, I'm not very familiar with proxmox and would appreciate any help?

I could install almost every other system from USB stick, Ubuntu Server, Windows 2008 R2 in any kind, ESXi ...

Cheers

Hi,
there can be anything... If you are firm in linux, boot an live-cd-distro like grml (you can simply copy the iso on a usb-stick (with block copy dd)) and have a look, do chroot and install grub again...
But you can get this easier: take the hdd from the testserver - put this as single hdd on your desktop.
Install there proxmox.
Put the hdd back to the testserver and boot.
remove the wrong networkcard-entry in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
reboot, and all should work.

Ok, so you think this might be just a simple grub installation problem? Why not, the former installation was Ubuntu server, maybe something wasn't overwritten correctly, I'll give it a try ...

I need to fix it on ther server, because I do use a HP Smart Array Controller and cannot pull out one single disk, to make the installation one an other machine ... ;)

Thx, cheers

Hi,
it's can be a grub-problem. Or something wrong with /boot?
You can try the grub-console and load initrd and kernel (with root=/dev/mapper/pve-root).

Bummer, the USB stick workaround did cause the problem and I couldn't see it in prior ... :(

Installation does run succesfully, making machine bootable. Here starts the issue, because USB stick is "/dev/sda" and my target disk "/dev/cciss/c0d0". Grub itself will now be installed on the first disk found, unfortunately "/dev/sda" even the USB stick ...

It is fixed quickly, boot from stick, you'll see grub, choose and boot your installation. Then login, pull the usb stick, change "/boot/grub/device.list" to your manner and call "grub-install --recheck /dev/cciss/c0d0". Afterwards change in "/boot/grub/menu.lst" the line "groot" from "hd(1,0)" to "hd(0,0)" and call "update-grub".
