As soon as I start a Windows 10 VM with an nvidia 970 GPU in passthrough, Proxmox crashes completely. It seems it's loosing connection to the storage.

The error which appears is:
Buffer I/O error on dev dm-1, logical block 0, lost sync page write EXT4-fs (dm-1): I/O error while writing superblock Aborting journal on device dm-1-8. Buffer I/O error on dev dm-1, logical block 3178496, lost sync page write JBD2: Error -5 detected when updating journal superblock for dm-1-8. EXT4-fs (dm-1): Remounting filesystem read-only

The system is an AMD Ryzen 5. I'm suspecting that the motherboard (Gigabyte GA-AB350 might be the culprit here)

My IOMMU grouping is as follows:

The only device I'm attempting to passthrough is 05:00.0 which is in group 8. I can't see any SATA controllers in the same group.

Any advice greatly appreaciated.

your iommu group '7' contains several other devices, such as an ethernet, usb and sata controller
if you want to do passthrough, you have to either passthrough *all* devices of a group, or not use them on the host, but you cannot use one device from a group and passthrough another from the same one

try putting the card in a different pcie slot or upgrade your bios, sometimes that gives better iommu grouping

If you can post a link to your motherboard (on the manufacturer's website), I can probably tell you which PCIe slots will give you a isolated IOMMU group (as all AMD Ryzen chipsets work almost the same).

Ahh yes. Aologies. It's in group 7, not 8. Currently I have it in the lower slot available on that motherboard.

The motherboard itself is https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-AB350-Gaming-rev-1x/support#support-dl-driver Basically it was a cheap thing I purchased a few years back. Was fine for running as a standard desktop machine.

I'll see what group it's in now if I move the GPU to the top slot.

Ok. Moved the GPU to the top slot, it's now group 8.

Currently seems to be working.
