Proxmox + Ceph Cluster to Provide SMB?

Has anyone ever setup a Proxmox Cluster with Ceph and then used a "gateway" VM to provide SMB/CIFS shares to client machines? Just curious about people's experiences and the performance of such a setup.

It should be kind of easy: the vm see the mounted fs and have the share on it: this way that VM can run in any of the (minimum) three proxmox that are in cluster (with ceph on)


Does anybody have suggestions on this?

It depends on requirements/hw. It's not different from running mailservers, db servers, webservers on the ceph. Every application has it's own performane. It works. It's performant? Test it. Ceph performance's tests are everywhere.

Samba supports CTDB for active/active File servers and you can use cephfs as backend file system. There has been a talk on that topic: Unlimited Fileserver with Samba CTDB and CephFS

Maybe it is easier just to spin up lxc with bindmount to cephfs?

How much performance do you need? We have a VM as a file server that had SMB share on it.
