Proxmox Ceph Cluster - No Raid

Hi!

For pure OS disks HW raid can be just fine, Ceph and ZFS won't really work with HW raids for technical limitations of those HW controllers. Note also that HW controllers in HBA mode normally work just fine for Ceph or ZFS.

Personally, I'd avoid HW RAID wherever possible though. Never had a good experience with those proprietary controllers - resilvering is a hit or miss and the data layout may not be anything obvious. So, getting data out after a controller broke, and there's no replacement available any more, may not be really possible.
But, if you are using ones that you trust and are experienced with and work fine for you, I see no reason to not go for it.

Hi,

So i can get HW Raid 1 for OS disks and it should be ok, cause there is no another way to care about OS disks itself.

I dont understand the question....

you have a raid system. so if a disk fails, you have to replace it of course.
If we have HW Raid, then yes but you suggested software raid on Debian. Why do i need software Raid if i have HW Raid? As we discussed above, the only way to care about OS disks is HW Raid, software Raid no solution.

Side note: MD RAID is not officially supported by Proxmox VE.

If you want an actually safe Software RAID (with checksumming, scrubbing, ...) use ZFS (or btrfs).

ZFS is supported by the official Proxmox VE installer, you can easily set it up directly from there.

Great, thank you for info.

if you have a hw raid, use it. its not recommended as stated above.

the official way to go with proxmox is zfs. one other possibility is mdraid

I share the opinion of t. that hw raids are pain. with zfs and ceph you must not use it other than jbods/hba mode.

and if course you can mix the modes, system on hw raid, rest of the disks hba / passthrough (OSDs)

HW Raid only for OS Disk where will install Proxmox VE. I must care about OS Disks in case of failure.
